Piet Botha

COACH EDUCATION MANAGER:

Piet Botha

(Level IV Coach and Accredited National Coach Developer)

Piet, was born in the Vaal Triangle where he grew up as a young cricketer representing the Vaal Triangle at primary and high school. He represented Vaal schools as well as South African Country districts schools at the Nuffield week since grade 10. He also played club cricket as a school boy at Meyerton Club and also represented the South African Country Districts Senior Men’s team as a matriculant.

After school he attended Rand Afrikaans University from where he made his first-class debut for Transvaal 'B' in 1987 as a 21-year-old. He went on to represent Transvaal where he opened the batting with Jimmy Cook under the captaincy of Clive Rice. Piet moved to Border in 1992 where he played for a further 10 years for the province. While’s at Border, Piet started his coaching career in 1997 as the Border Academy coach during the winter months. Piet did all the CSA coaching levels and is currently a CSA Level 4 coach. He also completed the Gary Kirsten CoachED course in 2021.

During his coaching career he coached Eastern Province before becoming the Warriors assistant coach under Mickey Arthur and Russell Domingo. Piet took over as the Warriors coach from 2011-2014 before he returned as the Eastern Province Coach. During his coaching career he also assisted the South African ‘A’ side as a bowling coach on various tours from 2010 until 2021. Piet was also part of the South African Emerging side In 2020 and assisted at various CSA High Performance Camps. Before Joining The Garden Route Badgers, Piet spent a 2 seasons with Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch as the Head of Cricket.

Piet is married to wife Marthie and they have two daughters, Rouxle and Leona



Gurshwin Rabie

Assistant Coaching

Gurshwin Rabie

(Level III Coach)

Gurshwin had a very successful first-class cricket playing career, representing the Cobras, Western Province, SWD and the Warriors as well as being selected for the South African Universities XI. Gurshwin started coaching in 2016, as the SWD under 19 and Academy Framework Coach, after which he obtained his CSA level 3 coaching accreditation. Gurshwin then moved to the Western Province Cricket Association, where he worked in a similar role before becoming the Western Province Colts/B side coach. He has recently moved back to Oudtshoorn to take up a role with the Six Gun Grill SWD Senior team as the assistant coach and has subsequently acted as the Interim Head Coach.

Gurshwin obtained a BCom General degree at the University of the Western Cape which he completed in 2008 and is currently finishing off his Honor’s degree in Social Sciences, which focusses on Urban and Rural Development, and also Research Methods and Research Papers.



Tyler Easton

SWD Strength and Conditioning Coach (S&C)

Tyler Easton

(Level II Coach)

Tyler Easton, who hails from Pretoria and was educated at Pretoria Boys High School, completed a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sports psychology and a Higher Certificate in Sports Science at the University of Pretoria. He also completed a Diploma in Sports and Exercise at ETA and has a Sports Massage Therapy Certification. He was formerly involved with the Titans cricket team where he completed his internship and a strength and conditioning trainer and massage therapist.

He also represented Northerns Cricket at schools’ level and has a CSA Level II coaching certificate.Tyler’s credentials, skills and experience speaks for itself and together with his professional work ethics he will be an asset for SWD Cricket.



Arishna Maghoo

SWD Lead Physiotherapist

Arishna Maghoo

(B. Physiotherapy)

Arishna comes from Ladysmith, KZN. She was a regular at Bakers Mini Cricket since preprimary school. Throughout Arishna’s schooling career she represented KZN Inland girl u 13, u19 and Womens’ teams, respectively. Arishna completed her B. Physiotherapy degree at UKZN in 2016. Arishna has a publication on People living with HIV in South Africa. In 2019 Arishna completed OMT1/NMSPT. Currently, Arishna has been accepted to complete a Masters in cricket workload surveillance in adolescent athletes. Arishna has versatile work experience in public, private, COVID Units and professionally sporting environments, with remarkable mentors and coaches. Arishna is the Physiotherapist at SWD Cricket and is grateful to have merged her passion for physiotherapy and cricket.

Arishna is bubbly, kind, loving, and family orientated. She believe’s that time and love are the best gifts for anyone



Martelize van der Merwe

SWD Womens Pipeline Head Coach

Martelize van der Merwe

(Level III Coach)

Martelize was born in Pretoria and grew up in Bethal, Mpumalanga. She was introduced to the game of cricket from an early age, spending time next to the field watching her father play.

Martelize started coaching in 2002 at Northerns Cricket Union, working with the U13 girls’ regional team. Moving up through the pipeline she was appointed as the Northerns women’s head coach seven years later. She obtained her Level III coaching certificate in 2011 and has been fortunate to have worked with the SA Emerging team in 2011 and 2012, and most recently with Team Duchess in the CSA Women’s Super League.



Wynand de Ridder

Academy & U/19 Head Coach

Wynand de Ridder

(Qualified sport science coaching, Level III Coach)

Wynand was born in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. He is currently the Six Gun Grill SWD Academy & Colts Head Coach. Wynand represented the SWD age group sides from U13 to U19 and after school graduation, he played cricket for North West Cricket Academy. His coaching career started at the age of 19.

Wynand studied and received a sport science coaching diploma from ETA Durban, and his CSA level 3 coaching qualification in 2013. Wynand was head coach of the SWD U11 and then U13 National Week teams for 3 years. Since then, he has coached at NMU – George, and won the USSA Section B week in 2018. He has also done international duty with the Kenya National Men’s side as an assistant coach, as well as the Head Coach. The team finished 1st at the Africa Regional ICC World T20 Cup qualification and then finished 2nd at the Africa World Cup qualifiers and missed out on 1st place due to net run rate behind Namibia. The team played at the ICC T20 Global World Cup Qualifiers in Dubai for a place in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Wynand was in charge of Kenya for the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League, to gain a spot in the 2023 ICC Limited overs World Cup in India.

If he is not on the field producing players for the professional side, you find him on the local racetrack heading for the checked flag.



Genevieve Anthony

KFC MINI CRICKET CO-ODINATOR

Genevieve Anthony

(KFC Coach)

Genevieve was born in Oudtshoorn and has lived here for most of her life where her biggest influence was her father who instilled the value of self-discipline from an early age. With this as a foundation she has seen herself move through various occupations, always ensuring her work is of the highest standard and she has brought this into the SWD environment where she currently runs the KFC Mini Cricket Program as well as the Performax program.

Her various roles have included: Engineering student – Electrical (PetroSA) – 3 years; Personal Assistant (Public Servants League) – 6 months; Library Assistant (South Cape Teachers College) – 6 years; Schools Secretary (Bridgton Secondary) – 3 years; Schools Secretary (Môrester High) – 13 years; Girl Friday (Diamond Force Security) – 2 months and currently as an Administrator (SWD Cricket) – 3 years and the KFC Mini Cricket Coordinator.

Through all of this she has stayed true to her father’s teachings. Genevieve has two sisters a brother, a daughter and a mother who puts up with her not even trying to cook.



Jody Martins

TALENT ACCELERATION CONSULTANT

Jody Martins

(TAP Consultant)

Jody serves the region as the CSA TAP Consultant and is the eyes and ears for the CSA TAP Programme in the Southern Cape. His role is to identify and keep track of the performances of players in the region, for the CSA TAP Programme which feeds the SA U19 Squads.
