The SWD Cricket Board recently identified a squad of Emerging players as part of the Chevrolet High Performance Cricket program in the province. The squad will be monitored by the SWD head coach, Garry Hampson, and besides training is specific cricket related skills the players will also be exposed to regular fitness tests and performance at club level will be closely followed.
According to Hampson the players from this squad will be next in line to be picked for the provincial team and they will be on a regular basis be invited to SWD squad practises. "The door is open for players that show potential to play for the province an I am very excited about some to the young players in the squad", he said. The Emerging team will play against similar teams from Eastern Province and Border in September and that will allow players to stamp their authority.
Two players with first class experience, Lyndon Volkwyn and Erinn Ewerts, are part of the squad whilst Martin Coetzee was recently playing two limited over matches for the SWD senior team whilst Rian Botha became a first choice bowler for the SWD team.
