SWD upset Northerns
24 November 2009
South Western Districts (SWD) pulled off a surprise eight-wicket victory over Northerns in the Cricket South Africa First-Class Three-day Competition in Oudsthoorn at the weekend. The win was their first of the season and showed promising signs for the Northern Cape Associate going forward.
“We are working on a three year plan and are looking to work on the core players. We have certain objectives that we have set out this season and I believe we are well on our way to achieving those. We have sent a clear message that we can produce quality players that can challenge the stronger unions,” said SWD CEO, Albertus Kennedy.
Pieter Stuurman scored his maiden first-class century as SWD posted 328/9 declared in reply to Northerns’ 174 all out in the first innings. The hosts were on the brink of a collapse at 181/7, before Stuurman and Nathan Murray (60) put together 134 runs for the eighth-wicket, a partnership which lifted them above the 300 mark.
“Pieter played a brilliant knock, he was hungry to do well after a series of disappointing innings'. He and Nathan got us out of trouble there but it was great to get one over my former union,” said coach Garry Hampson.
SWD were set a modest total of 128 for victory and reached it with little trouble, after bowling Northerns out for 278 in their second innings. This was also their first ever victory against Northerns and moved them up to seventh on the log. Defending champions, Griqualand West top the log followed by Eastern Province and Western Province. The competition enjoys a four-week break before resuming on December 17.
