About Us
HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
Cricket in the South Western Districts was managed and administrated by two bodies in the pre-apartheid era. The establishment of the SWD Cricket Board (SWDCB) in 1991 brought about the organizational unity of all cricketers in the SWD for the first time after a century-and-a-half of segregation and division. Between 1991 and July 1998 the SWDCB was affiliated under the auspices of the Western Province Cricket Association as a Country Districts province.
As from July 1998 until the restructuring process of the South African cricket (September 2003) the SWDCB was affiliated as a sub-union of the Boland Cricket Board. SWD was withdrawn from the South African Country Cricket Association (SACCA) competition between 1999 and 2000 and the provincial team only participated in the leagues of the Boland Cricket Board. After recommendations from a United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) Commission under the chairmanship of Mr Robbie Kurz (which was held in 2000), the SWDCB was funded directly from the UCBSA and was also re-introduced to the SACCA competition.
For the 2004/05- and 2005/06 seasons, after associative status was awarded to five new provinces (Kei, Kwzulu-Natal Inland, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and South Western Districts) as part of the re-structuring process of South African cricket, the SWD participated in the UCBSA Associates Amateur league competitions.
The General Council of the UCBSA approved a new format for amateur cricket, incorporating the associates with the eleven affiliated provinces, during February 2006. This competition whereby three-day matches enjoy first class status was contested for the 2006/07 season subject to review during the course of the season. The 2006/07 season was followed by a review process by Cricket South Africa (CSA) – as from July 2006 the newly adopted Constitutional name of the governing body of South African cricket – was followed by a review process on the progress of associate provinces. The outcome of the review process as adopted by the CSA General Council during April 2007 was that SWD will be allowed to continue competing in the South African Airways Challenge competitions and Three Day matches played in this competition will continue to be afforded first class status.
